Let’s learn about Radiation Safety and Protection
Everyone is exposed to radiation from both natural and artificial radiation.
• Natural radiation : cosmic radiation from the earth’s atmosphere, gamma radiation from the rocks and soil in the earth’s crust, etc.
• Artificial radiation : medical and dental diagnosis radiation, consumer and industrial products
Natural radiation (83%) contributed more exposure than artificial radiation (17%) of people living in U.S.*
( * National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements : NCRP )
Recommendation on Annual Limits for Human Exposure to Ionizing
• Occupational dose limits : 50 mSv annual effective dose limit and 20 mSv in 5 years cumulative effective dose limit**
• Nonoccupational dose limits : 5 mSv annual effective dose limit and 1 mSv in 5 years cumulative effective dose limit**
(**Ionizing Radiation Regulations1999 : IRR1999 )
Effective dose of complete mouth survey is about 0.015 mSv*** and Effective dose of panoramic is about 0.026 mSv****
( ***Avendanio B et al: Effective dose and risk assessment from detailed narrow beam radiography, Oral Surg Oral Med Pathol Radio Endod 82:713,1996.
****Frederikson NL, Benson BS, Sokolowski TW: Effective dose and risk assessment from film tomography use for dental implant diagnostics, Dentomaxillofac Radiol 23:123,1994.)
Radiation Protection#
Personnel
• Leaving the room or taking a position behind a suitable barrier or wall.
• Never hold film in place.
• Having personnel-monitoring devices.
General public
• Avoid being around the working area.
• Notice radiation warning signs.
Patient
• Lead apron and thyroid collar should be used.
• Using high speed film.
• Using collimator and filtration.
